Old distractions as bad as new tech

DRIVERS are as much distracted by "old technology" as by new gadgets, according to a survey. Adult passengers, twiddling with the radio and children in the car were the main distractions causing either a near-miss or an accident, the poll of more than 18,000 motorists found. These three distractions came ahead of operating the sat-nav and talking on a mobile phone as the biggest reasons for lack of driver attention.

Hertz brings back rent-a-racer program with Dream Cars

In 1966 -- at the dawn of the horsepower wars -- Carroll Shelby made a deal with the Hertz Corporation to produce a line of Shelby GT350 Mustangs for rent. Volkswagen has unveiled the new seventh-generation Golf in Berlin, 36 years after the original model was first released. As expected the Mk7 is a further evolution of the Golf lineage, adding what appears to be an extra layer of precision to its surfacing and graphics. New production techniques helped the design team reduce its weight by 100kg, and at 4,255mm long the new model is 56mm longer than its predecessor, with a 59mm longer wheelbase of 2,637mm and it is also 13mm wider, at 1,799mm, and 28mm lower at 1,452mm.
