Toyota FT-EV concept unveiled at Detroit auto show 2009

By Ben Pulman Motor Shows 10 January 2009 20:00 This is Toyota’s new FT-EV concept, the first of three eco-friendly cars being unveiled at the Detroit motor show over the next few days, the other two being the all-new third-generation Prius and the hybrid-only Lexus HS250h. The FT-EV is Toyota’s way of confirming that it will build a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in 2012, but it’s also using the concept to promote its other environmentally friendly vehicles. The FT-EV concept is built on the iQ’s platform, and designed for commuters with daily journeys of less than 50 miles.

That’s because the BAC Mono is not just a stunning car to drive with its 2.3 litre 4-cylinder Cosworth engine delivering 280bhp in a car that weighs so little it gets a power to weight ratio of 520bhp per tonne, and can get to 62mph in a scant 2.8 seconds, and comes with a great spec. The Mono is built using carbon fibre composite wrapped round a steel safety cell, an FIA compliant steel rollover structure, an F3-spec 6-speed sequential ‘box, pushrod suspension, racing damping, AP brakes and special tryes from Khumo. And it’s properly bolted together too, unlike many track-focused cars.

Aston Martin & Mercedes join forces

Aston Martin Production will soon see an injection of Mercedes DNA This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about a partnership between Aston Martin and Mercedes, but according to Car & Driver it’s now just about a done deal. As long ago as March 2009 we reported that Mercedes supplied the basis for the Lagonda SUV Concept (a Mercedes GL), and six months later we reported that Aston Martin were working on a Mercedes S-Class based Lagonda saloon. More recently we reported that the GL-based Lagonda SUV was back on and that Mercedes wanted Aston Martin to put together the next generation of Maybach.
