Condition:Used

Here I have for sale a very hard to find (yes rare) 2nd generation Sandcast wrinkle tank. This tank was fitted to early production Sandcast Honda CB750 motorcycles, immediately following the discontinuation of the19 litre wrinkle tank. This second generation tank is found on bikes from around frame number 600 to Frame 1940. The more common (and not so hard to find) 3rd generation wrinkle tank was fitted on all early bikes from approximately frame number 1940 to around frame 13,000.

The two (2) main distinguishing features of the 2nd generation tank is the three clearly seen groups of wrinkles, the additional groupss of wrinkles being found on each side of the tunnel beside the usual top wrinkle group, plus a raised petcock pad (clearly distinguishable in the photos) which allowed the early petcock to be fitted. This early petcock could not be easily fitted to the later wrinkle tank. Research of Honda factory literature supports this tank's date of manufacture as being appropriate for fitting to vins beginning around frame number 600 to as high as around frame 1937 or so.

Simply put, where do you think you will find another one, let alone one in as good a condition as this one. My wife isn't in as good condition and you certainly won't find another like her. No sir.

I have been an active restorer of vintage and classic motorcycles including many a Honda Sandcast for many, many  decades and have only ever seen a few of these tanks come up for sale in the last 10 years, so if you have an early Sandcast and don't have this tank then here is an opportunity to snap up this item to more complete your bike.

This tank has no internal rust, the outside being raw steel with primer, does not leak and comes with original badge mounting hardware. There is one dent on the right rear aspect of the tank. My eBay feedback is untarnished so what you're looking at in the photos is what's for sale.

Treasures from West Germany lurk at Sonoma Raceway

Fri, 04 Apr 2014

In my role of Chief Justice of the 24 Hours of LeMons Supreme Court, I travel to Sonoma Raceway, aka Sears Point, at least twice per year. Most of the time I'm there, I'm stuck disciplining miscreant racers with incomprehensible penalties, but every so often I slip away in my Race Organizer Review car to shoot some action photos of the competitors. A good area for shooting LeMons cars is from the access road that runs parallel to the track between turn 10 and turn 11, and getting there takes me past an area of shops and garages… and I always spot some interesting cars parked there.

A classic covey gathers at The Quail for Monterey weekend

Sat, 15 Aug 2009

For seven years now every August, the fairway in front of the Quail Lodge has been transformed into a racing paddock. Great sports, race and super cars of all eras sprawl out on the grass like a tremendous, wheeled museum of speed. This year, in addition to the usual categories of "pre-war sports and racing," "post-war sports," etc., there were classes for BMW M1s, a celebration of 50 years of racing at Daytona and even a class of eight Devins.
