Volkswagen XL1
Fri, 22 Feb 2013This, remarkably, is the production version of the Volkswagen XL1, the most fuel-efficient production car in the world, a car we'll see in Geneva in a little over a week. Barely changed from the concept version shown at the Qatar motor show two years ago, the production XL1 is the first production result of VW's 1-liter project – to design a car that uses less than 1l/100km (282.5mpg imperial) – that started with the lozenge-shaped, tandem-seat 2003 1L and the later L1 of 2009. The XL1 actually beats that by sipping just 0.9 liters with CO2 emissions of 21g/km.
Evanta Barchetta gets revealed at Goodwood Revival
Sat, 13 Sep 2014Evanta Barchetta gets revealed at Goodwood Revival There’s definitely an appetite for properly built, low-run retro sports cars – from proper roadsters to GTs like the David Brown’s Speedback – so the arrival of the Evanta Barchetta at the Goodwood Revival, looking like a properly sorted (and built) retro-styled Roadster, should be greeted with enthusiasm, rather than moans about ‘Garden Shed’ cars. That’s because the Evanta Barchetta is the result of a collaboration between Afzil Kahn – he of Bradford’s Kahn Design – and Evanta’s Ant Anstead, with low volume experience and expertise coming from Ant’s Evanta and design and engineering from Kahn. So it should be properly sorted.
Infiniti-designed Santa's sleigh (2010)
Thu, 23 Dec 2010Today's sleighs are courtesy of Infiniti. The design team in Japan have sketched out a couple of Infiniti sledges for Father Christmas to deliver his presents across the globe in imperious style. The first sleigh looks like an Essence supercar concept meets an FX crossover - from that long snout and high-mounted, wedgy headlamps to the complex, textured surfaces, sliced and diced by a laser-pointer's worth of sloping lines flying off at all sorts of angles.
