It can help eliminate lock and unlock cycling and premature unwanted lockup to avoid engine lugging and spark knock, while allowing lock-up at highway speeds for fuel economy. It can also be used for lock-up operation when converting a non-lockup equipped vehicle to a lock-up style transmission and converter. But the world's biggest carmaker didn't notify customers at the time of the change. And it says it is still uncertain how to handle the thousands of Prius vehicles that were sold before the fix.
