New video of the 2012 Porsche 911 Cabrio ahead of Detroit debut

Ahead of its official public debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week, We have new video of the 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet.

We may have had the reveal of the 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet (and the 911 S Cabriolet too) back in November, but the 911 Cabriolet is only due to get its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week. Which explains why Porsche has chosen to deliver a new video of the 911 Cabrio now.

Offering the same engine choices as the new 911 Carrera Coupe, the 911 Cabriolet is being debuted in the States for the simple reason that the US buys more 911 Cabrios than anywhere else. But the UK still loves a soft-top 911, so sales on this side of the Pond will be strong too.

With the regular 911 Cabriolet getting the new 3.4 litre flat six with 350 horses and the Carrera S Cabriolet getting the 3.8 litre lump with a more fulsome 400 horses, performance is going to be distinctly adequate. But perhaps more impressive will be economy, with both models bettering 28mpg – if you keep your right foot under control.

With its new fabric-skinned composite roof, better economy and better performance, both the 911 Cabriolet and 911 S Cabriolet are very appealing. It’s a cliché, but the 911 is the single most usable supercar on the planet (and yes, even the entry-level 911 can be considered a supercar), even if it doesn’t have the ‘Soul’ of Italian and British supercars.

And the new 911 Cabriolet promises to make the coupe almost redundant with its clever new roof promising an experience – with the roof closed – almost indistinguishable from that of the coupe. The Cabriolet does cost more – £79,947 for the 911 and £89,740 for the 911 S – but it also gives you the fun of top-down motoring when the weather is right.

Both the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet and Carrera S Cabriolet will go on sale in the UK in March.
