2015 Hyundai Genesis earns Top Safety Pick

Fri, 09 May 2014

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis sedan got the first-ever Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick for a rear-wheel drive luxury sedan. It's also the first RWD luxury sedan to earn a “Good” rating in the small overlap crash test. The ranking applies to Genesis sedans equipped with the optional front crash-prevention feature.

To get the Top Safety Pick award, cars must earn “Good” ratings for occupant protection in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint test, no less than “Acceptable” in the small overlap test and at least a basic rating for front crash protection.

The recently redesigned Genesis has a mind-bending amount of safety equipment, including its new “sensory surround safety,” which uses automatic emergency braking to help avoid a potential collision. The system uses the front radar from the smart cruise control system and the forward camera from the lane departure warning. The car's lane keeping assist provides steering wheel vibration if you stray over the lines.

The Genesis also gets a blind spot warning system, heads-up display and lane change assist, which keeps an eye out for fast approaching cars in the next lane, plus rear cross-traffic alert.

The 2015 Genesis debuted at the Detroit auto show this year, and comes equipped with either a 3.8-liter V6 making 333 hp or a 429-hp, 5.0-liter V8. All-wheel drive became an option as well, probably helping with that top safety rating.
