Audi Q2 at Paris Motor Show?

Thu, 14 Jun 2012

The growing range of SUVs from Audi looks set to continue with the launch of the Audi Q2 at this year’s Paris Motor Show.

It’s no secret that Audi is on a mission to fill every conceivable car niche you can imagine, and a big part of that plan is to introduce more SUVs in the Audi ‘Q’ range.

This time last year we reported that Audi looks set to introduce the Q1, Q2, Q4 and Q6 in the coming years, with all but the Q1 set to be ‘Coupe SUVs’ aimed at style conscious buyers. But Autocar seems to have a different take on this.

They report that the Audi Q2 will arrive at the Paris Motor Show in September as a three-door compact coupe SUV. Which is pretty much what we expected last year. But they say the production model – set to arrive in 2015 – will actually be a five-door in a regular compact SUV guise.

That doesn’t seem to make a huge amount of sense to us, as we believe Audi will use the even numbers Q models as ‘Style’ versions of the odd numbered Q cars. But doubts about the likelihood of the Q2 being a five door compact SUV aside, the rest of the report makes sense.

Based on the new VW MQB platform that underpins the new Audi A3, the Q2 will be around 200mm longer than an A1, sitting almost between the A1 and A3 in size. Power options will be a choice of two petrol and three diesel engines with a range-topping Q2 S with the 2.0 litre turbo destined for the next generation Golf GTI delivering around 225bhp.

Styling will take its cue from the Quattro Concept and the VW CrossCoupe Concept (which. although a five-door, is distinctly coupe-like) with both FWD and 4WD options and a range of eco stuff like stop-start, brake energy recuperation and gear shift indicators with the aim of delivering a stylish compact coupe crossover capable of up to 70mpg in diesel guise.

It all makes sense – apart from the five-door claim – but we should know more before an Audi Q2 Concept arrives in Paris.
