Audi Smart Display tablet for your car

Fri, 17 Jan 2014

Audi has been showing off a new in-car tablet prototype called the Audi Smart Display, which gives passengers wireless control over infotainment and climate control systems.

It also features high-speed LTE (4G) mobile internet connectivity, to keep you connected on the move.

The Audi Smart Display is a 10.2-inch full-HD touchscreen tablet that uses Google’s Android operating system – nothing especially unusual there.

However, Audi has created this device “with the robustness and reliability of a component designed specifically for automotive use”.

Not only is it finished in brushed aluminium – very classy – but it can also “easily withstand extremes of temperature and its robust hardware makes it crash-proof”.

If, as Audi seems to be saying, it can survive a car accident, it ought to withstand the occasional drop as well. But perhaps the firm simply means you won’t need to reboot it every five minutes.

For many, the real excitement here isn’t just that you might soon be able to change the in-car temperature settings or radio station from the back seat; no, it’s the possibility of an Audi designed tablet that you can carry and use all the time.

People do so love that Audi design sugar, after all.

Sadly for them, the Audi Smart Display is only a prototype at this stage, having debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. But as soon as we hear any more, you’ll be the first to know.
