BMW 4-series M Performance (2013) first pictures

Fri, 19 Jul 2013

BMW has revealed a range of M Performance accessories for the BMW 4-series ahead its arrival in UK showrooms this October. The accessories include both mechanical and cosmetic changes and will be offered to customers from January 2014.

What do the M Performance models add to the BMW 4-series?

It’s not all about the look – the M Performance models offer power gains for even the entry-level 420d, which, says BMW, do not have an affect on efficiency yet offer a perceptible performance increase. The 402d gets a 16bhp/29 lb ft shot in the arm, while the 430d is given 27bhp/29 lb ft with the 435i treated to an additional 33bhp and 37 lb ft for a 335bhp output.

The 428i misses out on a power hike, but it – and the 435i – are offered with an M Performance silencer system (fair call for the diesel, but why would we want a BMW six to be quieter?). There’s also a limited-slip diff and sports suspension to help the already talented 4-series out of corners, upgraded brakes as well as larger, lighter alloy wheels. There’s a choice of an 18-inch Winter design, or guard-filling 20in wheels in two different styles.

The cosmetic changes?

The 20in wheel chosen for the car shown helps achieve the skunk look with smatterings of black around the lower bumpers and rear diffuser, the side skirts and along the flanks of the 4-series’ body. The ‘air breather’ on the side is black, matching the front grille and the mirrors and the 20in wheel on the car shown.

What have they done to the inside?

Spot the lettering above the dash to let passengers know that you’ve spent a bit more on your 4-series. Further proof’s offered by the M Sports steering wheel, complete with its red centre marking, and the carbon and Alcantara used on the gear knob and hand brake. You can also add carbon and Alcantara strips across the doors and dash, as well as steel pedals and a special footrest (a performance footrest?) and floor mats.

Of course, you can mix and match M Performance options to your own tastes and budget, with the full gamut on show at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
