BMW 6 Series Coupé (2012) - now in the UK

The 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe bowed in ahead of the Shanghai Motor Show back in March, and it finally arrives in the UK next week (15th October).

Ahead of the arrival of BMW’s big coupe in UK showrooms, BMW has sent us a huge gallery of 6-Series photos together with price and model details specific to the UK.

Three engines will be on offer in the 6-Series Coupe – at least until BMW get round to the new M6 Coupe – with two petrol engines and one diesel engine offered, although BMW expect a full 90 per cent of all 6-series coupes sold in the UK to be specified with the 3.0 litre diesel.

The 3.0 litre diesel in the 640d Coupe delivers 309bhp, gets to 62mph in 5.5 seconds, averages 51.4mpg and emits 145g/km – truly remarkable figures for a big, powerful and luxurious coupe. No wonder most buyers will opt for the £62,080 640d SE Coupe ahead of its petrol siblings.

Those petrol siblings include the 650i Coupe with 401bhp, a 0-62mph of 4.9 seconds, 26.6mpg and emissions of 246g/km and the 640i Coupe with 316bhp, a 0-62mph of 5.4 seconds, 36.2mpg and emissions of 181g/km.

But even though the diesel 640d eclipses the petrol-engined 640i and 650i totally in economy terms – and doesn’t do a bad job in the performance stakes either – BMW has pulled out all the stops to keep fuel consumption and emissions in check across the new 6-Series range.

Just as they do across their more prosaic ranges, BMW has fitted the 2012 6-Series with a raft of its EfficientDynamics gizmos, as well as a ECO PRO mode which just turns the wick down for a smoother and more economical drive when the mood takes.

The EfficientDynamics stuff includes auto stop-start, active air flap behind the kidney grill, Brake Energy Regeneration and Electric Power Steering all of which make the new 6-Series the most economical – and powerful – BMW 6-Series range ever.

But even though economy is high on the priority list for the new 6-Series, decent levels of equipment – and the driver with an eye for a bit of sportiness – aren’t forgotten.

Standard spec include 18″ alloys (19″ on the 650i), Dakota leather upholstery, eight-speed auto ‘box, electric memory seats, BMW Professional SatNav, Xenons, LED Fogs and park distance control.

You can also opt for the M Sport pack on the new 6-Series – on all three models – which adds an M body kit, 19″ M alloys, dark chrome tips for the exhaust, high gloss shadowline exterior trim and black brake callipers.

The interior isn’t forgotten either on the M Sport, with sports seats and a multi function M Sport multifunction steering wheel together with black headlining. The M Sport Pack will also now be available on the new 6-Series Convertible.

With a starting point of £62,080 for the 640d, rising to £71,840 for the 650i M Sport Coupe, the new 6-Series isn’t a cheap car, but once you’re tempted by the extensive options list – including stuff like Night Vision, Lane Warning Systems, Surround View and Heads-up Display – you’ll probably end up paying a chunk more.

But there’s an awful lot of car on offer for your money and, as a nice little extra kudos, BMW are only likely to sell around 1,000 new 6-Series Coupes in the UK a year.

Which means you won’t be running in to another round every corner – always a bonus.
