BMW M1? Or BMW M8?

We’ve had the rumours of a ‘New’ BMW M1 Supercar for what seems like forever. Many have said that the only M1 BMW will make will be an M version of the 1-Series. But we don’t buy that. We’ve been convinced that BMW will launch a new M1 in the next couple of years using the underpinnings of the Vision ED concept to make a new M1 Supercar; perhaps even approaching hypercar territory.
And now come rumours of a BMW Supercar from German site Auto Zeitung, only they’re calling this Supercar the BMW M8. They’re quoting something similar to our understanding of where BMW are going with the whole Supercar thing, but they’re saying BMW are considering a much more ‘Hyper’ version of the M1 – or M8 – than we envisaged.
According to Auto Zeitung the BMW Hypercar will sport a modified version of the V10 in the current M5, with the Vision Ed powerplant chipping in an extra 165bhp from the front and rear electric motors. In essence this is a BMW version of the Porsche 918 Spyder, and makes good sense.
This is speculative, and we can’t get any sensible answers from BMW contacts. But it does make sense. We don’t buy the ‘M8′ bit, as we still thing the BMW 8 Series will be a range-topping, four door swoopy coupe and building a two door version and adding an M tag will just tread all over 6 Series territory.
We buy the concept. We still think it will be the BMW M1.
