BMW M7 coming after all?

Mon, 28 May 2012

Despite BMW’s stating they will never make an M7, BMW’s American boss Ludwig Willisch says it will happen.

Three years ago the BMW ‘M’ anoraks got excited when they thought BMW was about to produce a range-topping M7, but it turned out the photos that elicited their excitement were simply a 7 Series with an M Sport pack bolted on.

In answer to the M-anorak’s disappointment BMW pointed out – very sensibly in our view – that the market for an M7 would be tiny and that you could already have a 760i M Sport with a stunning V12 and 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. How much more could and M7 offer, was the logic?

But now we have (well, the UK doesn’t but the rest of the LHD world probably will) the new BMW 750d xDrive which offer sub-5 second 0-62 mph from BMW’s incredible tri-turbo diesel and the question of a real M7 has cropped up again, with BMW’s North American sales boss saying it will happen after all.

According to Ludwig Willisch the buyer demand for an M7 is there in America and, perhaps crucially, his counterpart at BMW China is also pushing for a range-topping M7 too. Which does suggest it’s becoming increasingly likely BMW will bite the bullet and produce a hardcore 7 Series for M fanatics.

But what will they put under the bonnet?
