BMW – Mean, GREEN, Driving Machines

Fri, 23 Jan 2009

BMW may be a lot of things. But stupid isn’t one of them. They haven’t stayed at the top of the Premium Car sector for so long without a pretty good idea of what they’re doing.

BMW rolled out their EfficientDynamics a couple of years ago, and won the accolade of the Greenest Premium Manufacturer in 2007 for its UK Cars. And it’s just been announced that they’ve won again for 2008. It just shows what a concerted effort can do, and jumping in early in the game is paying off for BMW.

BMW EfficientDynamics has made BMW the Greenest Premium Manufacturer for 2008

With the EU imposing stricter and stricter emission targets on car makers, they have to find a way to get their average down. Doing so allows them to build the high-end performance and luxury cars, which are always a small part of a manufacturer like BMW’s range. There are miles more 320d sold than M3; heaps more 118 than 750. So rolling out a clever programme like Efficient Dynamics makes the market work for them at both ends.

The Efficient Dynamics wraps a heap of sensible ideas in top a package that helps reduce Co2 output, including:

Which all adds up to a pretty good result for BMW. The UK Co2 averages for the premium manufacturers across their ranges in 2008 were:

So well done BMW. Hopefully, these great low averages will mean we’re more likely to see cars like the BMW M Cars stay in production and the BMW Hommage go in to production!
