BMW Zagato Roadster revealed

Sat, 18 Aug 2012

The BMW Zagato Roadster has been revealed at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. IS it heading for production?

Earlier this week we had a tease for the BMW Zagato Roadster, a soft-top version of the BMW Zagato Coupe we saw just a few months ago at Villa D’Este, and now we get the real deal with a reveal at Pebble Beach.

Looking very much the same as the coupe version, the Zagato Roadster features a light revised rear end, a soft-top  (which is said to mimic Zagato’s double-bubble trademark roof – but BMW released no photos) and the same Zagato detailing as the Coupe.

Those details include the small ‘z’ pattern making up the grill, a beautifully sculpted bonnet with cooling ducts, bumpers and 19″ alloys and the large cooling ducts on the front wheel arches. Inside the brown leather seats get contrast stitching and a Zagato ‘Z’ on the headrests.

BMW doesn’t say what’s under the bonnet of the Zagato Roadster, but rumour has it that it’s a tweaked version of the 3.0 litre turbo six-pot from the Z4 sDrive35iS with something approaching 400bhp thanks to a tweak to the ECU, a pressure boost and a new exhaust.

BMW are still calling the Zagato Roadster a Concept, but so much effort – with the Coupe at Villa D’Este and the Roadster at Pebble Beach – does point to a limited edition run of both cars.

But if there is to be a limited production run of the BMW Zagato Roadster (and the Coupe) it seems likely to cost at least twice the Z4 sDrive35iS’s £45k.
