Buy a Corvette Stingray, get a performance driving school discount

Wed, 26 Mar 2014

New Corvette Stingray owners can get a sweet deal at the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Nevada. The two-day program will cost owners just $1,000, instead of the usual $2,500, Chevy said on Wednesday.

“We designed the Corvette Stingray to make its owners better drivers through technologies such as the driver mode selector, active rev match, electronic limited-slip differential and more,” said Tim Mahoney, chief marketing officer, global Chevrolet. “Through the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School, they'll learn to make the most of its technologies and delve deeper into the Corvette's capabilities, resulting in a more exciting and fulfilling driving experience.”

That sounds right to us. Anything that can make drivers more capable is a step forward, and the 455-hp Corvette is such a bargain that it opens extreme performance to a wider, potentially inexperienced audience.

The discount from Chevy is good for one year from the purchase date, and cannot be transferred.

What makes this deal even better is that owners don't even have to bring their own Corvettes: Spring Mountain has a fleet of Stingrays for instruction.

The country-club-style property features a 2.2-mile road course and caters to all levels of drivers, from track novices to near experts. The road course is just one of eight track layouts at the school. Instructors can use everything from a 0.5-mile setup for karting to the 3.4-mile full course for faster machines.

“It's more than simply going fast and learning when to turn and apply the throttle,” said Fellows. “Mind speed and decision-making are key elements in the high-performance world, and our car control exercises and on-track training will help drivers improve their ability to process information quickly and accurately, resulting in a better coordination of eyes, hands and feet to improve their driving skill. It's great fun -- and drivers will definitely challenge their limits to find the limits of the new Stingray.”
