The winners of the 2012 Car Design of the Year Awards, as voted for by Car Design News readers, were announced at the annual Car Design Night at By Pass nightclub on the evening of the first Geneva motor show press day.

Over 350 car designers were in attendance to catch up with their colleagues and meet new peers at the first European show of the year.

Car Design News' editor, Owen Ready, presented the winners of the annual Car Design of the Year Awards. After two months of voting, the winners of the Best Production and Best Concept Car design categories were announced as the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupé and the Chery TX respectively.

The 6-Series Gran Coupe, which made its debut at the 2012 Geneva motor show notched up yet another win for BMW, which last year claimed the Concept Car gong with its ConnectedDrive prototype.

The award was presented to Karim Habib, Head of Design, BMW Automobiles. The 6-Series emerged victorious after collecting 20 percent of more than 3,600 votes, beating the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in second place, which attracted 12.5 percent in the ten-car shortlist.

Meanwhile the Chery TX picked up the award of Best Concept Car, collecting a staggering 34.7 percent of the vote in its category to become the first ever Chinese winner. Accepting the award at Car Design Night was James Hope, Chery's design director.

The Chery fended off stiff competition PSA, with the Peugeot Onyx and Citroën Numéro 9 completing the top three.

The next Car Design Night will be held at the Shanghai auto show in April.
