Chevrolet Cruze lands in the UK

Tue, 10 Mar 2009

GM is having its problems, as we’ve chronicled almost endlessly, but they are pushing ahead with the launch of their Focus-sized offering, the Chevrolet Cruse, around the world. So far it has been launched in the Far East and Australia, and now we’re getting it in the UK from the summer. But oddly, it’s not going to arrive in the US until next year.

This is potentially a big deal for GM, and they’re pulling out the stops to make sure the Chevy Cruze competes – at least on price. Starting point for the UK will be £11,545, and you’ll have a choice of 1.4 or 1.6 litre petrol engines, or a pair of 2.0 litre diesels; one with 125bhp the other with 150bhp.

The Chevrolet Cruze - a very competitively priced Ford Focus rival

Standard equipment is at a decent level and includes CD , electric windows and six airbags.  Optional kit includes air-con and better alloys. And even the top of the range 2.0 litre VCDi comes in at around £15k

Chevrolet has developed the Cruze from scratch, not drawing on any existing car. This is their first real attempt at a ‘World Car’ and frankly at the price point it’s at, where it’s even undercutting cars like the Yaris, we need to take it seriously.

We have to admit that we haven’t driven one, so we can’t say whether the dynamics are European or American. But the car looks more European in style, and the interior is ergonomically better than most American offerings, so it’s promising.

As soon as we get our hands on one we’ll let you know!
