Chevrolet Spark EV going on sale in Europe

Wed, 13 Feb 2013

The electric Chevrolet Spark is heading for a European debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale in Europe in 2014.

Chevrolet has revealed that the Spark EV will; make its European debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show and that there are plans to launch the Spark EV in Europe in 2014. Well, in ‘Select European Markets’ at least.

By ‘Select’, we’re not sure whether Chevy mean well-off, upmarket countries or ones with a predilection for alternatively powered cars. And we’re not entire sure the UK will fit the market profile Chevrolet are seeking as a criteria. Which is a shame.

It’s a shame because the Spark EV does sound a bit of a hoot (with the usual EV caveat that it’s only any use in a city and only for those with deep pockets who want a toy) with a thumping great 400lb/ft of torque on offer, enough, combined with the electric motor’s 130 horses, to scoot the Spark EV to 62mph in under 8 seconds.

If the Spark EV does land in the UK in 2014 it will probably cost in the region of £30k and, even though Chevy say it will have one of the best EV ranges on the market, those who buy it won’t get very far with their right foot planted in the carpet.

Still, if it does hit the UK, it would be a great little car to blat round London almost silently and frighten the bejesus out of tourists.

As long as you keep local and can afford to spend three times the amount a normal city runaround costs.
