Coventry University students prepare for MA Degree Show

Tue, 14 Nov 2006

Olly Stephens'  taxi design uses new technologies and a fresh design aesthetic to propose a vehicle that will give commuters new options for urban travel. Jimi Pearce has looked at how the emergency services might adapt to cater in light of increasing incidents of violence towards them. His MergeNC concept is an urban patrol vehicle that cuts response time whilst providing a safer working environment for its personnel. Jan Dedek's 'E-go' project is a future concept for personal transport for major metropolitan cites; to help with commuting, parking and traffic issues.

Other students have taken new form languages as their starting point. Ed Stubbs wanted to explore how advanced aerodynamics could influence vehicle design language, with a vehicle that changes profile to suit its environment. Toshihiko Kubota has proposed a new automotive design language based on Japanese perceptions of proportion, structure and graphics. Drew Smith's project looks at how incorporating light-generating displays into automotive surfaces will change the look of cars, while Reno Wideson will show a fuel cell motorcycle concept that demonstrates how more environmentally-responsible machines can result in exciting designs that will continue to appeal to enthusiasts.

The Coventry Masters programme - now in its fourteenth year - is a four-semester course which emphasises advanced concept thinking and computer-aided design. The course has a strong international presence which ensures a diverse cultural mix is reflected in student projects. Students from Japan, India, Taiwan and Australia are among this year's graduates.

Admission to the show is free and runs from Friday 1st December to Friday 8th December 10am-5pm daily. The Private View is on Thursday 30th November 5.30-9pm, by invitation only.
