Diesel Jaguar XF sets off on U.S. mileage-test road trip

Fri, 11 Nov 2011

There's a diesel-powered Jaguar XF on U.S. pavement, but good luck catching a glimpse of it.

The 2.2-liter, four-cylinder diesel XF set off on Nov. 11 on a cross-country road trip, the goal being to test how far it can go on just one tank of fuel.

Jaguar claims the 2.2-liter XF is the most fuel-efficient Jaguar produced to date. With 187 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, it's said to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable eight seconds flat and reaches a top speed of 140 mph.

The British-registered XF will make its way across 2,800 miles and 11 states, rolling from New York to Los Angeles in about seven days. Behind the wheel are independent U.K. test drivers David and Alexander Madgwick.

The mission follows a similar European venture that sent a different XF diesel on an 816-mile journey from Castle Bromwich in the United Kingdom to Munich, Germany, on a single tank of fuel.

You can follow the trip at www.facebook.com/jaguar, or on Twitter at www.twitter.com/jaguar (#XFCoast2Coast). A GPS device on the car will track the XF's progress as it wends its way toward California.
