Drivers living in their vans

Wed, 09 Oct 2013

BRITAIN'S van drivers have admitted to turning their vans into mobile bedrooms as they spend more time in their vans than at home.

In a survey of the country’s van drivers, 11% admitted to using their van as a bedroom for convenience. A further 31% said they used their van as an office, while half of all van drivers take their tea break in their work vehicle.

A third of all van drivers (30%) said they like to read to read in their van to relax when not driving, while a cheeky 5% admitted to having sex in their vans.

Melissa Hunt, Business Manager at Direct Line for Business, which carried out the survey, said: ‘With tradespeople working long hours on the job, it is no wonder they often end up eating, managing paperwork and even sleeping in their vehicles. However, customising their van with the latest gadgets and installing entertainment centres may not only be a distraction and compromise their safety, it is unlikely to be covered if it’s stolen from the van.’

Hunt added: ‘Thieves are no longer targeting the vans of builders and plumbers to steal tools, they are after expensive laptops, tablets and smartphones. With so much high end technology being stored in tradespeoples’ vans, it is important that owners have sufficient insurance to protect their belongings.’
