Ferrari releases teaser image of Enzo successor

Fri, 14 Dec 2012

Update: Ferrari has released a new image of the Enzo successor's rear, which we've attached above.

Of the 288 GT0, F40, F50, Enzo and its upcoming successor, Ferrari Technical Director Roberto Fedeli says, “Let's refer to them as our 'specials.' "

That works for us. In a day and age when a Porsche Boxster S delivers performance on a par with yesterday's supercars, that particular appellation seems to have lost much in the way of meaning. And differentiating vehicles such as the Koenigsegg Agera R or the Pagani Huyara by referring to them as “hypercars” seems gauche and lame, like something a precocious, awkward teenager would do. A teenager who would later look back and cringe at the term once he figured out how to wear his pants.

We like The Specials. The Specials knew how to wear their pants. We also like Fedeli's simple categorization of the extra-performance, limited-lot Ferraris as specials.

With that out of the way, Ferrari's official magazine has offered the biggest visual tease yet on the car often referred to as the F70. It's currently known as the F150, though the vehicle could be called something else by the time the wraps come all the way off. Given that the last car in the line was named for Enzo Ferrari, might it not be a fine idea to name the new one for Gioacchino Colombo, architect of Ferrari's long-lived family of V12 engines?
