Hyundai Veloster Turbo gets 400bhp

Tue, 16 Oct 2012

Hyundai in the US has created a Veloster for this year’s SEMA show – the Hyundai Velocity – with a 400bhp Cosworth makeover.

SEMA show cars are always extreme and always completely over the top, but they do show just what can be done with mainstream cars when car makers are let off the leash of marketing constraints.

This year Hyundai is out playing, and as well as creating a Genesis Coupe with Cosworth power they’ve also taken the new Hyundai Veloster Turbo and created a 400bhp monster SEMA car.

Hyundai’s Design and Engineering divisions  in Irvine, California, have roped in Cosworth to give the Veloster a severe fettling with performance pistons, rods, turbo, thumping great intercooler, intake manifold, intake charging system, fuel system and engine management.

The outcome of all Cosworth’s efforts takes the US spec Veloster Turbo from 201bhp to a much more appealing 400bhp and, even more importantly, 350lb/ft of torque.

Thankfully, Hyundai has remembered to make the effort to ensure the Velocity can stop and handle too, so there’s a set of 4-piston Brembos, Bilstein springs with monotube dampers and a set of Khumo Ecsta SPT 275/35R19 high performance tyres.

Hyundai’s bods at Irvine have also bolted on a set of go-faster bits including 19×9″ satin charcoal racing wheels, rear diffuser, thumping great wing, big front and rear cooling ducts, custom exhaust and a plethora of graphics. It all looks typically SEMA extreme and appealing.

Although how easy it will be to put 400bhp through the front wheels we wouldn’t like to say.
