IFR Aspid – simply astonishing

Sun, 02 Aug 2009

The IFR Aspid drew a lot of attention at this year's Salon Prive

Not the best known name in the motoring world, IFR – and it’s main man, Ignacio Fernández – are never the less a force to be reckoned with, and we’re pretty sure we’ll be hearing a whole lot more from them before too long.

So what’s the IFR Aspid, I hear you asking. Think something akin to a Caterham 7, but sporting technology from Buck Rogers and with none of your garden-shed makers bare-bones creature comforts. This Aspid is properly sorted and luxuriously equipped.

Performance is a superbike and Veyron crushing 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds. It can also do 0-100 mph in 5.9 seconds. And back to zero in just 3.1 seconds. Which should make your face change shape and mince your internal organs. But this isn’t some stripped-out shell with a big engine and no sophistication. The Aspid is better equipped than many supercars, boasting touch-screen technology in a civilised and inviting, air conditioned cabin.

But despite the advanced engineering and sophistication the Aspid offers, IFR are looking for more. They’re working on a system that has similarities to that Nissan revealed recently – Nissan Driver Assist – which will allow infinitely variable adjustments to the car’s setup, coupled with GPS tracking that will allow the car to predict the settings needed to cope with the drive you’re on. Extremely clever stuff.

We’ll revisit IFR and the Aspid again soon. There’s lots to discover. But if you want to get your hands on an Aspid you won’t have to stump up a King’s Ransom. The IFR aspid starts at just €107,00 + tax.
