Jaguar has had a busy Detroit, unveiling not just the new XFR super-saloon and its one-off, tricked-up 225mph salt-flats saloon special, but also the revised XK range.

Echoing the changes to the XF range (and in the coming months, most of the Jaguar Land Rover range), the 4.2-litre petrol V8 has been upgraded to the new 5.0 V8. Jag calls it the third-gen AJV8, reflecting its growth through the years from its 4.0-litre origins. The latest engine benefits from direct injection for more precise control over the combustion process.

The end result? Naturally aspirated XKs run a 380bhp output, while the XKR swells to a decidedly Germanic 503bhp thanks to a revised supercharger induction system. The new 2010 model year cars are pretty rapid, needless to say; the XK hits sixty in 5.2sec, the R model in just 4.6sec.

What else is new on the Jag XK range?

It's not just monstrous performance. The new third-gen engines are cleaner and less thirsty than before, despite their elevated power outputs. And the new models are distinguished by a subtle Ian Callum makeover to tidy up the design.

The front spoiler detailing is spruced up with aluminium effect upright inlets, while the rear end sports LED taillights and the rear valance is new too. Inside, the cabin gains the JaguarDrive pop-up gear selector from the XF.

Prices start at £59,900 for the coupe and £65,900 for the convertible, while the XKR costs £72,400 in tin-top coupe form. A new Portfolio trim is added for buyers wanting lashings of toys.
