Jaguar reveals first ‘new’ lightweight E-Type

Tue, 12 Aug 2014

CLASSIC car fans and speculators alike will be rejoicing as Jaguar has revealed the prototype of its ‘new' lightweight E-Type.

Six further examples will be built by Jaguar Heritage and sold as period competition vehicles, using previously unused chassis numbers to give them true authenticity. In 1963 Jaguar started the 'Special GT E-type' programme to build 18 lightweight racers, but only 12 were ever made. Now Jaguar will complete the series over 50 years later.

Each car will have an aluminium bodyshell as well as doors, bootlid and bonnet also formed from the lightweight material. Although modern technology was used to digitally map the original car to ensure accuracy, the decision was made to use period methods of construction. This still delivers a 114kg weight saving over a standard steel-bodied E-Type.

The engine will also be faithful to the original car, with a straight-six powerplant using an aluminium block, big-valve head and dry sump lubrication suitable for track work. A trio of 45DCO3 Weber carburettors provide fuel and air to the engine, while Lucas mechanical fuel injection is available as an option. Jaguar says it will provide in excess of 300bhp.

This first prototype car will make its public debut at the famous Pebble Beach show in Monterey this weekend, while Jaguar remain tight-lipped over the eventual cost of the six rare examples.
