Korean Grand Prix (2012) RESULT

Sun, 14 Oct 2012

With the Red Bull of Mark Webber on pole and Sebastian Vettel alongside, could Vettel take the lead in the driver’s championship in Korea?

Last year, Sebastian Vettel took the win in Seoul, and this year it’s a second place on the grid for Vettel as he strives to overtake Alonso in the race for the drivers’ championship, with Mark Webber sitting on pole.

After Vettel’s display in Japan in the last race, and a clear edge over the rest of the fields in qualifying in Korea, it was no surprise to see the Red Bulls go clear from the start, with Vettel getting the jump on Webber and heading off in to the sunset for a clear win – despite a few tyre traumas near the end – with Webber riding shotgun for a solid second place.

Behind the dominant Red Bulls came a pair of impressive Ferraris, with Alonso grabbing third and a good drive from Felipe Massa to take fourth place, and in the process overtaking McLaren for second place in the constructors championship.

That loss of a place in the constructors race was down to a torrid race for McLaren. After Button slowed on his qualifying lap under a yellow yesterday he consigned himself to 11th on the grid and paid the price as Kobayashi took out both Button and Rosberg in a wayward manoeuvre on turn three of the first lap.

Hamilton fared little better, despite running fourth early on, with a broken rea anti-roll bar causing excessive tyre wear and forcing Hamilton in to a third pit stop, That brought him out in tenth behind the Torro Rossos and he ended up finishing exactly there for just a single point.

Behind the Red Bulls and Ferraris, Raikkonen grabbed fifth for Lotus, Hulkenberg did well to put his Force Indi in sixth and Grosjean got seventh for the second Lotus followed by the two Torros Rossos and the McLaren of Hamilton.

Vettel’s win puts him six points clear of Alonso with four races to go, and it would take a brave man to bet against Vettel taking yet another drivers title.
