Lamborghini Murcielago – recall for fire risk

Lamborghini Murcielago on Fire

We don’t do the whole ‘Wrecked Exotic’ here on Cars UK. There’s something a bit unedifying about publishing pictures of the misfortunes of others, be they accidents or fires. Seems a bit ghoulish to us, although I’m sure we’d get even more traffic through the site if we did.

But even though we don’t publish them, we get stories floating through our inbox every day with an exotic wreck or three or a supercar on fire. Very occasionally we will run the story, as we did with the McLaren F1 fire last year, but only because the car is so rare.

So a McLaren F1 on fire is rare. Sadly, a flaming Lamborghini seems not to be. We seem to get a photo emailed in on an weekly basis showing yet another of Sant’Agata’s finest engulfed in  a ball of fire. So it’s no surprise that there’s a recall going on for Murcielago Coupes and Roadster to fix the fuel tank.

It seems that welds holding the fuel pump inside the fuel tank can break off, causing a leak. In a case of stating the bleedin’ obvious the recall notice says “FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.” Never! You learn something every day.

The only surprise is that it’s just the Murcielago. We seem to get sent more pictures of Gallardos on fire than just about anything else.
