Lexus LFA Roadster - arriving in 2014

We reported last year that Lexus had given the green light to chop the top of the limited edition LFA and turn it in to a new halo car for Lexus – the Lexus LFA Roadster.

Since then – and the report then was just  a whisper from a couple of sources – we’ve heard nothing more concrete. But now Automotive News seems to have caught up with our story and are quoting the Lexus LFA Roadster as in the planning at Lexus for 2014.

In a breakdown of the Lexus plans for the next few years – which includes models we don’t get in the UK such as the ES and LX – AN says the LS will get a sorting for 2013, the RX will get new underpinnings shared with the next Camry (which we no longer get) in 2014  and that the LFA will get its top chopped off for a launch in 2014, a year after production of the LFA ends.

Our source when we ran the story on the LFA Roadster last year reckoned that there would be no limit placed on the LFA Roadster in terms of production – unlike the 500 car limit for the LFA – and that Lexus would make as many as they could sell.

That will give Lexus a ‘get out of jail free card’ if they fail to sell what they plan (or carte blanche to build more if the market responds),  but it may make it more difficult to shift a £400k Toyota Convertible if the exclusivity isn’t there. Which may be exactly what current LFA buyers are thinking about plans for an LFA Roadster.

Just wait until they hear the next one – the Lexus LFA Hybrid is being mooted.
