Mark Donohue’s 1971 Trans-Am champion Javelin hits the auction block

Thu, 01 Jul 2010

A piece of Penske Racing history will be up for bid at Russo and Steele’s 10th-anniversary Monterey Auction, Aug. 12-14.

Driven by Mark Donohue, the 1971 AMC Javelin won the 1971 SCCA Trans-Am Championship with seven victories in 10 races that year.

Upon Donohue’s completion of the race at Lime Rock in 1971, the second-place winner was remarkably still a full five laps from the finish line.

This is the only car Penske built for the 1971 season and was the last Trans-Am car to be driven by Donohue.

The Javelin has since been restored by MAECO Motorsport and maintained by McGee Motorsports.

Russo and Steele’s auction in Monterey has been extended to a third day this year.
