The McLaren 12C MSO Concept (pictured) highlights McLaren’s MSO upgrades

Unless you’ve ever been and bought a supercar (or a high-end luxury car) new, you may not realise that the regular options list is just the starting point for individual customisation. In fact everyone, from Ferrari to Rolls Royce, will do pretty much whatever you want to your new car if your pockets are deep enough, and it’s a game – and a cash cow – McLaren are keen to make the most of.

That’s why we had the extreme McLaren X-1 project a couple of years ago, but that went a lot further than most Mclaren buyers want to go with their new car. So McLaren has built a 12C Concept to show just some of what you could have on your new 12C if you want to spend heavily with McLaren Special Operations (MSO).

The 12C Concept McLaren has built to showcase its MSO upgrades still looks like a 12C (unlike the X-1) but gets carbon fibre for the bonnet, front wing louvres and rear wing vents with a new airbrake and a snorkel on the roof (just like the P1 and F1) also in carbon fibre.

Inside, the 12C gets more carbon fibre and a new instrument cluster with shift lights, there’s a new set of diamond-cut alloys and stuff like the wheel nuts and and filler caps come in titanium to save a bit of weight.

It’s a relatively subtle, and no doubt costly, makeover for the 12C, but it gives customers the chance to see just some of what McLaren’s MSO service can offer.
