McLaren 12C Spider gets public debut at Pebble Beach

Tue, 21 Aug 2012

McLaren has given the convertible MP4-12C – the McLaren 12C Spider – its first public outing at Pebble Beach.

It’s a month since we had the reveal of the McLaren 12C Spider – the very appealing trick roof version of the MP4-12C – but we hadn’t actually seen it in the flesh. At least not until this weekend when McLaren gave the 12C Spider a public outing at Pebble Beach.

Resplendent in Volcano Yellow, McLaren revealed the 12C Spider at the Gooding and Company auction preview in Monterey before parking it on the concept car lawn all weekend for the assembled masses to enjoy.

With the same carbon fibre tub as the MP4-12C, the 12C Spider offers almost identical performance to its coupe sibling with a 0-62mph of 3.1 seconds and a top speed just a smidge lower at 204mph.

Perhaps most appealing, apart from the rigidity and almost identical performance, is that the engine is still on display beneath a glass screen behind the tonneau cover. Oh, and the fact that the folding hard top can be raised and lowered on the move.

The McLaren 12C Spider is already on sale and first customer cars are expected in November. And we think there will be a few more orders for the 12C Spider in Volcano yellow after the Pebble outing.
