Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class (2014)

Wed, 14 Aug 2013

As previewed in excellent concept form at the Shanghai motor show, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class has been revealed in its production guise.

Built on the same platform as the A-, B- and CLA-Classes, the GLA further expands Mercedes' portfolio of C-segment models into the semi-SUV market to take on the likes of the Audi Q3 and BMW X1.

Proportionally it appears far happier than the A and CLA from these initial images, particularly around the scuttle area. Despite its SUV billing it does appear more of a raised hatchback although features such as the squared wheel arches and obligatory lower body cladding raise its man points.

"With its striking features the GLA embodies our progressive thinking and enthrals with its off-road proportions," says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design at Daimler AG. "The clearly defined surfaces convey power and serenity, and we have managed to combine as much emotional appeal as possible with as much clarity as necessary."

Like its siblings it's a class leader in the aerodynamic stakes with a drag co-efficient of just 0.29. Its vital stats are length 4,417mm, width 1,804mm and a height of 1,494mm.

Inside its IP and overall architecture are shared with its platform mates, the major differences being in terms of color and trim, with optional galvanized trim the highlight.

The car will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show next month.
