Mercedes SLC confirmed once more

Mercedes big-wigs have been discussing future plans for AMG and have confirmed production of the Mercedes SLC – a baby SLS.

It’s always nice to speculate on new cars to come from interesting car makers, and in the case of Mercedes we’ve been actively playing the baby SLS game – a Mercedes SLC – since 2009.

What we need to remember is that the SLS – and any SLC to come – is not really a Mercedes, it’s an AMG. The SLS is the first AMG model that hasn’t been born from an existing Mercedes model, and the SLC will be the second. So the ‘Go to’ for confirmation on the SLC is really AMG.

So when AMG’s Christoph Jung confirmed last year that AMG are working on a smaller SLS, that it will be front-engines and be a V8, we took that as a clear enough indication the SLC was on its way.

And now its Mercedes’ turn to come out and confirm the SLC, with Gorden Wagener telling Auto Express the SLC  is real and Dieter Zetsche telling Autocar that it will be front-engined.

We had doubts about the SLC moniker, mainly because it is an old Mercedes name used for what was the forerunner to the CL (and SEC), but that seems to be the chosen name, so at least we’ll now be able to refer to it properly in future.

What we’ve also gleaned from Wagener’s utterings to Auto Express is that the Mercedes Style Coupe Concept – to which we’ve attached every possible badge – will actually arrive as the Mercedes CLA.

So that’s two Mercedes names tied up in one go.
