Mitsubishi previews three Tokyo concepts

Tue, 08 Oct 2013

MITSUBISHI will showcase three new concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show, all using SUV body styles.

Heading the trio of experimental designs is the Concept GC-PHEV, a full-size SUV using a development of Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It aims to offer the everyday advantages of an SUV and class-leading environmental credentials.

It will feature Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) to provide dynamic stability and all the off-road utilitarian ability an SUV owner might need, which may include enough towing capacity to cope with a horse box in muddy fields.

Alongside the GC-PHEV will be the Concept XR-PHEV, a compact SUV for a burgeoning market sector. It will use a downsized, lighter and repackaged plug-in hybrid drivetrain for useful urban electric running potential. Mitsubishi also says that it will be styled to resemble a ‘sport coupe.’

The final new Mitsubishi design for the Tokyo show is the Concept AR is technically, according to the firm, a compact MPV, but with SUV-esque looks aiming to secure greater appeal with the public.

The AR will use a downsized direct injection turbocharged engine as part of a raft of efficiency improvements to underpin a flexible interior design. Mitsubishi is quoted as saying that the AR will have a number of potential seating configurations ‘to provide comfort for all passengers.’
