New Audi TT at Tokyo Show? Or could it be the Audi R4?

Audi R4 (left) or new Audi TT (right)?

A few weeks ago Audi Blog in the Netherlands ran a sketch of what they thought was a new Audi TT. But it was a very basic sketch and, although interesting, we didn’t pursue it.

But as the rumours that Audi are planning on taking a new Audi TT to Tokyo later this month are intensifying, we thought we should look afresh at Audi Blog’s sketch.

It’s an entirely plausible sketch of what the back end of a new TT could look like, and there is no doubt that Audi will have the next generation TT in the planning. But is that what this sketch is?

Assuming the sketch is real and leaked out of Audi – which is not certain 0 it not possible that the TT badge on the back is there to divert attention from what the new Audi at Tokyo could be.

As long ago as 2010 we had confirmation that a baby R8 was in the mix – the Audi R4 – and that Audi had plans for not just an e-Tron EV version but also a proper production model with ICE engines.

So we dug out the R4 Concept photos from Detroit 2010 and had a look. And there are a number of similarities between this sketch and the R4 Concept.

Of course, if the sketch is real, it could be that the new TT has simply taken its inspiration from the R4 and that Audi are really planning revealing a new TT at Tokyo.

On the other hand, nearly two years on from the R4 Concept seems a decent amount of time to have come up with a production R4, and Tokyo is as good a place as any to preview it. Even if only to take a bit of the gloss of the debut of the production-ready Subaru BRZ and Toyota FT-86.

But we’ll find out very soon.
