New VW Beetle gets new engines

Thu, 26 Jul 2012

Volkswagen has finally made the new VW Beetle available with the 2.0 litre TSI petrol and 2.0 litre turbodiesel engines.

When we reported the other day that the new VW Beetle Convertible was arriving at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November we did say that VW were about to announce the arrival, finally, of the 2.0 litre TSI petrol and 2.0 litre TDI diesel for the Beetle to make it a bit more appealing.

It seems VW must have been listening as they’ve now announced that you can grab a new Beetle with either the more powerful petrol or the diesel engine, which should help sales of the new Beetle.

The 2.0 litre TSI petrol engine gives the Beetle decent performance with a 0-62mph of 7.5 seconds, 197bhp and an official economy figure of 38.2 mpg, which means emissions of 179g/km.

The 2.0 litre TSI is only available in the regular Sport trim or one of the special edition Beetles – Turbo Black and Turbo Silver – with standard kit including 18″ alloys, tinted glass, Cruise, sports seats, Climate and parking sensors.

The ‘Turbo’ special editions get ‘Turbo’ badges, 19″ alloys and silver or black mirrors. The Sport trim also gets four-link rear suspension, a set of twin exhaust pipes, red callipers and a rear diffuser.

The new 2.0 litre TDI is probably going to be the big seller in the Beetle range with an official 57.6mpg, emissions of 129g/km and a 0-62mph of 9.5 seconds. It comes in either Design or Sport Trim levels.

The Beetle TDI cost from £21,850 and the Beetle 2.0 litre TSI from £22,295. Both models are available to order now.
