The Peugeot 508 - Finally official

Today was the day we expected Peugeot to drop the details of the 508 on the world, and indeed it is so. Although they actually shoved them out last night after leaked photos of the Peugeot 508 appeared yesterday.

Apart from seeing more versions of the photos we brought you yesterday, what do we now have confirmed? Well, you won’t be surprised to learn that the new 508 is bigger than the old 407. It’s about 10mm longer. And it’s shorter than the old 607 by about 20mm. We’d never have guessed.

The 508 is actually based on the same platform as the 407 (and the Citroen C5, for that matter) and offers up the saloon car and the estate – as shown in the photo at the top. Peugeot are not being very forthcoming on the oily details – they no doubt want to keep a bit of powder dry for the official debut at Paris – but we do know there will be a hybrid.

The Hybrid Peugeot 508 will effectively be 4WD as the front wheels will be run by the ICE and the back axle will get an electric motor, delivering a combined 200bhp. Along with all 508s the Hybrid will also feature Stop-Start using Peugeot’s e-HDi system (same as Citroen’s).

Which is about all we have from Peugeot. And no news on whether there will be a Peugeot 508 Coupe to replace the Peugeot 407 Coupe. There probably won’t be, which is a bit sad. The 407 Coupe is a bit of an old-fashioned lump, but rather appealing. We actually have one at the office this week for review – so more on that next week.

Peugeot are building the 508 in France for the Euro market and in China for the Chinese market. Expect the 508 on sale in early 2011.
