The Peugeot 3008 ENVY Special Edition

Car makers have become obsessed with crossovers. So obsessed that even makers of perfectly good SUVs have started to call their offerings crossovers (case in point – Mitsubishi Outlander). Crossover is the socialy acceptable face of the pseudo-SUV. An amalgum of hatch, SUV, MPV and estate offering a higher ride and flexible accommodation, the crossover is becoming  the ‘Must Have’ in every car maker’s range.

Some crossovers are just a badge; they offer nothing new. But some are properly brilliant, and one of the best – if not the best – is the Peugeot 3008. It offers not just the higher ride height – so beloved by car buyers – and decent, flexible accommodation, but it’s great fun to drive and is one of those rare cars that actually make you grin – no mean feat for a high-riding family car.

True, the Peugeot 3008 has looks only a mother could really love, but it does everything so well you can forgive it not being an oil painting. It’s also not badly priced, although if you do go top-end on the spec and shove in the best lump – the 2.0 litre HDI – it does start to get a bit on the pricey side.

But every car – however good – needs a bit of a push from time to time, and the usual way is to offer a special edition or two. Which is just what we get with the Peugeot 3008 SR and Peugeot 3008 ENVY Special Editions.

The 3008 SR is based on the Sport and adds SatNav, Bluetooth, Grip Control, 16″ alloys and Winter Tyres. Although by the time your 3008 SR arrives winter will probably be over and you’ll have to fork out for summer tyres. The 3008 SR manual starts at £20,645 and the auto at £21,195 and comes with the HDi 112 lump. The 3008 SR seems to be aimed primarily at fleet customers.

The 3008 ENVY (Peugeot’s capitals, not ours) is a prettifying pack – also based on the Sport spec – which adds the exterior styling pack, tinted windows, panoramic roof and head-up display. Available with either the HDi 112 or the VTi 12o engines, the 3008 ENVY can be had for £18,895 if you opt for the petrol or £20,495 for the diesel.

The Peugeot 3008 is already better value – and a better car – than the 308. These special editions just give you an extra reason to buy one. And if you do, you really won’t be disappointed.
