Porsche 918 RSR

Thu, 13 Jan 2011

Following an absence of four years from the NAIAS, Porsche had been promising an all new concept to its North American contigency. The 918 RSR is exactly that.

Evolving from the 2010 918 Spyder concept shown in Geneva, the RSR stays true to the overall theme of the Spyder but adds a roof and race-specific elements. Donning the classic Gulf colors and an array of motorsports additions, the cars intentions are clearly for the track. The large rear spoiler, canards, deeper rear diffuser and front splitters help bring the car visually closer to the floor, the reduction in ride height clearly helps as well.

Inside, the 36,000 rpm flywheel that stores kinetic energy for the hybrid takes the place of the passanger seat. The drivers seat has been replaced with a more purposeful bucket seat and harness. The IP remains relatively untouched, with the exception of the removal of unncessary luxuries. The wheel has also been replaced with a more intuative race item, featuring a shift light. The extensive use of leather in the 'race-car' interior, would suggest that this is little more than a concept at present.
