Porsche Cayman and Boxster GTS on the way

Wed, 29 Jan 2014

Porsche Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS variants are expected to be unveiled at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show this year, before the upgraded versions of the German firm’s two-seater coupe and convertible models go on sale in April.

According to reports, development work on both cars is now almost complete, with both vehicles gaining a power increase and revised styling over existing Cayman and Boxster models (pictured).

Porsche has used the ‘GTS’ tag before, for versions of its existing cars that provide a more focused driver experience and greater emphasis on involvement and handling, and which retain normally aspirated engines. The Cayman GTS and the Boxster GTS will follow this recipe, too.

Both vehicles will get a 15hp increase, boosting the 3.4-litre flat-six Boxster GTS’ horsepower to 330hp, while the Cayman GTS will be more powerful again (as per the standard model range), developing 340hp.

The pair of new GTS models will get Porsche’s sweet six-speed manual transmission as standard, although just like the regular Boxster and Cayman models, a PDK dual-clutch automatic gearbox with paddleshifters will be available as an option.

As part of the GTS pack both cars are likely to receive the manufacturer’s ‘Porsche Active Suspension Management’ PASM system as standard.

Expect an even more powerful Cayman R model in the future

This will allow drivers to electronically control the firmness of the suspension system, switching between Comfort, Normal and Sport modes at the touch of a button depending on the level of damping required – the setup will likely be bespoke to the GTS variants.

The brace of GTS vehicles are also expected to feature a revised front and rear bumper design, 20-inch alloy wheels from the 911 Carrera S and a sports exhaust.

Porsche’s PCCB carbon-ceramic brakes will remain an option however, leaving headroom for an even more powerful, more focused Cayman R model in the future.

Both the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS are scheduled to make their debuts at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show in April, with the cars going on sale later that month.

Porsche is yet to outline pricing for both models, let alone confirm the vehicles will indeed be unveiled at the Chinese show. MSN Cars did contact Porsche, but was told that, "as part of its global policy, the company doesn’t comment on future product activity."

Expect the GTS extras to command a £4,000 price premium over the equivalent S model, meaning the Boxster GTS could come in at just over £50,000, while the Cayman GTS is likely to cost about £52,750.
