Rolls Royce Ghost EWB - a Chinese launch

Really, you wouldn’t expect Rolls Royce to release something as common as a long wheelbase Ghost, would you? No, this Ghost is an extended wheelbase Ghost – the Rolls Royce Ghost EWB.

When we reported back in December that the LWB Ghost was getting close – and the Ghost DHC and Ghost Coupe, for that matter – we’d half expected Rolls Royce might get a shake on and take the Ghost EWB to Geneva. But they didn’t. Instead they kept their powder dry for Shanghai.

The Rolls Royce Ghost EWB – as expected - gets a chunk of metal slipped in behind the B pillar - 170mm or just over 6.5 inches – to double the amount of legroom in the back for those who feel like partying.

Which means that now you can have a Roller that drives like a sport executive express and will also fit a pair of spoilt plutocrats in the back. What that extra 6 inches does to the handling we don’t know, but it shouldn’t be too dramatic.

Rolls Royce say that the launch of the Ghost EWB in China underscores the significance of the Chinese car market – as if we didn’t already know – and that the EWB would be available in limited numbers in 2011, and only built to order even after full production starts in 2012.

Rolls Royce has also revealed the China Edition Ghost, which again underlines just how important China is to Rolls Royce. The China Ghost gets red upholstery, twin gold coachlines and a gold plated Spirit of Ecstasy. Everything the discerning Chinese capitalist’s heart could desire.

Who’d have ever thought it? China, a bigger market for Rolls Royce than the UK.
