Rolls-Royce announces new Wraith coupe for 2013

Fri, 18 Jan 2013

Rolls-Royce will launch the Wraith, a new Ghost-based coupe, at the 2013 Geneva motor show in March. We’re promised it’ll be the most powerful and dynamic model in the 108-year history of Rolls-Royce.

‘Expect the boldest design, the most dramatic performance and the most powerful Rolls-Royce that has ever played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine,’ said Rolls boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös when he announced the Wraith at the company’s world dealer conference in London this morning.

So just how powerful will the new Roll-Royce Wraith be?

We hear the Wraith will run a tweaked version of the 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 found in its Ghost sibling. Power is expect to rise from 563bhp to over 600bhp, and there’ll be a significant hike in torque too. And to match the extra poke, expect a chassis overhaul with a more sporting set-up to deliver on that promise of the Wraith being Rolls-Royce’s most dynamic ever vehicle.

Where does the Wraith name come from?

The Wraith name has been used on a Rolls-Royce before, way back in 1938, and according to Müller-Ötvös it ‘alludes to an almost imperceptible but powerful force, something rare, agile and potent, a spirit that will not be tethered to the earth.’ Mmm…

Deliveries of the Wraith are expected in the fourth quarter of 2013, with prices estimated at over £220,000.
