SEAT reveals new X-Perience crossover

Tue, 24 Jun 2014

SEAT has revealed the new Leon X-Perience, the latest addition to the expanding Leon range and a foray into a new niche for VW's Spanish subsidiary.

Following a method proven by the likes of Audi, Subaru and Volvo, SEAT has taken its new Leon estate, the ST, and added 4WD and plastic bumpers to create a new model. The basic shape of the Leon ST has remained unchanged, with a 15mm rise in ride-height and new anodised black roof rails completing the transformation.

Being carefully described as an 'all-road vehicle' and not an off-roader, it would be fair to say the X-Perience's 4WD system is designed for those wishing for extra security on the road, and will not be climbing mountains anytime soon. That said, the X-Perience will provide permanent 4WD, with the majority of the power remaining at the front of the car, unless pressed.

The X-Perience will be fielded with a typical line-up of Volkswagen Group engines, with three diesels and a single petrol option. All engines will be turbos, with a 2.0 litre TDI producing 184hp and 380Nm of torque topping the range. Both the 184hp 2.0 litre TDI and the 180hp 1.8 TSI petrol will come with a paddle shift DSG gearbox as standard. A less powerful 150hp 2.0 litre and a 110hp 1.6 litre TDI will stick with a 6 speed manual as standard.

The quickest of the X-Perience range will reach 60mph in 7.1 seconds, and go on to a top speed of 139mph. SEAT claims a fuel consumption figure of 48mpg for the 184hp TDI, and it will produce 129g/km of CO2.

Inside, the SEAT will be given unique interior touches, consisting of X-Perience badges on the door sills and steering wheel, as well as orange stitching throughout. Adaptive cruise control and assisted braking are also promised.

SEAT has not yet provided the price of the new X-Perience, but has promised good value, and lots of kit as standard.
