Sir Stirling Moss, 81, retires from racing

Thu, 09 Jun 2011

While participating in a live interview with Joe Bradley of RadioLeMans.com on Thursday, Sir Stirling Moss announced his retirement from the sport that he loves.

"This afternoon I scared myself, and I have always said that if I felt I was not up to it or that I was getting in the way of fellow competitors, then I would retire," Moss said.

Moss is one of the most recognizable figures in motorsports, with a career that has spanned more than 60 years. His accomplishments include twice winning the British Grand Prix and being a three-time winner of the Monaco Grand Prix. He also won the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio and the Tourist Trophy.

Moss then moved to historic racing, where his involvement with Goodwood brought about worldwide attention to the now-famous festival.

With his announcement, one of the greatest motor racing drivers has turned in his keys.

"I love racing, but now it is time to stop," Moss said.
