Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept revealed

Wed, 30 Sep 2009

The Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept will be at the Tokyo Motor Show

The Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept has the usual flights of fancy, like double-length gullwing doors and a motorised dash that moves up and down to give thr driver the best view ahead. But if you ignore the obvious concept bits, the Tourer looks very close to a new Subaru model.

Powered by a 2.0 litre turbo-charged Boxer engine, the Hybrid Tourer also gets a pair of electric motors and a CVT ‘box (shame on the CVT. Be better to have a manual like the Honda CR-Z Concept). The 10kw electric motor at the front is used to recharge the lithium-ion battery pack and add a bit of oomph when needed. The additional 20kw motor at the back sends drive to the rear wheels under low-load conditions and when maximum acceleration is required. And as there is no propshaft for the rear wheels the Tourer gets a flat-floored cabin.

Subaru will churn out more detail closer to Tokyo. More news then.
