Subaru WRX Concept: New York Auto Show 2013 – UPDATED + video

Fri, 29 Mar 2013

Subaru has revealed a concept for the next generation WRX at the New York Motor Show this week, but will it make it to the UK?

The Subaru WRX is the poster child for the Playstation Generation, but Subaru in the UK seem to have fallen out of love with the idea of a budget supercar, preferring to concentrate on fluffy bunny dreams of hybrids and fresh air from the tailpipe.

So there’s a lot of uncertainty if the next generation WRX – previewed this week in New York by the WRX Concept – will make it to the UK when it turns in to a production model. But it should.

Looking exactly as you would hope, the WRX Concept comes with an even more aggressive look – despite being a four door saloon – with some extra width (100mm) and sitting a chunk lower (80mm) with a trademark bonnet scoop, bulging wheel arches and a carbon fibre roof to lower the centre of gravity. All that’s missing is a set of gold alloys.

Subaru aren’t being forthcoming about what’s under the bonnet – save to say it’s a new turbocharged engine and intercooler – but the bigger bulge in the bonnet and a set of quad tailpipes hopefully hint at something more powerful to be channelled to all four wheels for impressive levels of performance. Rumours suggest standard power over 325bhp and maybe a chunk of electric assistance.

Lovers of Subaru’s performance WRX’s need to start making their feelings known if they want the new WRX to hit UK shores when it turns in to a production car, probably sometime in 2014.

In the meantime, with the price of the current Subaru WRX STI slashed by £6k, you can grab one to put you on until the new WRX arrives in the UK.

Or doesn’t.
