Subaru WRX STI 2011: Drops Impreza and adds a saloon

Thu, 07 Oct 2010

The Subaru WRX STI - saloon or hatch at £32,995

Back in April we reported that Subaru had unveiled the Subaru Impreza WRX STI at the New York Motor Show and commented that it turned up as a four-door saloon. Which we haven’t had in the UK for a few years. We suggested Scoobie lovers should give Subaru some grief if they wanted the Scoobie Saloon back in the UK. Looks like they did.

Subaru has announced that the 2011 WRX STI will be on sale from this month and it will – for the first time – come as a five-door hatch and a four-door saloon. So obviously all those emails to Subaru UK paid off. And also for the first time the ‘Impreza’ bit is dropped. This is just the 2011 Subaru WRX STI.

The new WRX STI gets a sorted suspension and stiffened bodyshell based on the ‘C’ spec. The suspension gets more travel and lighter wheels reduce unsprung weight at each corner – and they look good.

Cosmetic changes include new bumpers, bigger rear quarter panels and a lower ride height. Inside there’s more premium materials and some all new Recaros. Standard kit includes  keyless, hill start, Climate, electric windows, all-new radio-CD with AUX and USB input jacks, Bluetooth and Cruise .

Subaru admit that the oily bits are unchanged for the 2011 WRX STI, but they claim that improved torque delivery results in ‘better response and more linear acceleration’. If they say so. Still, the 5.0 seconds to 60mph is not exactly slow, changes or not.

The WRX STI goes on sale officially on 20th October and will cost £32,995 whether you opt for the 4-door or the 5-door.

Still a supercar for the Playstation generation.
