Testa Rossas, Lemons, Laguna Seca and design inspiration – Monterey Car Week 2014

Mon, 01 Sep 2014

As a first timer to this annual festival it’s easy to think of it purely as Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. However, in reality the blue-chip show on the famous golf course is simply the climax of a whole week of formal events, impromptu gatherings and an overall sense of overwhelming from the sheer quantity and quality of the cars, all packed onto this upmarket West Coast peninsular.
It's this variety that means this event really is what you make of it. Want to live it up like a billionaire and feel the buzz of $400million worth of cars pass under the auctioneers’ hammers, followed by some lobster and champagne in the golf club? Knock yourself out. Prefer to join in the numerous parades in your own car and hang out with like-minded enthusiasts, away from all the red trousers? You can do that too. More interested in racing? Head to Laguna Seca. In reality it’s best to feed from the metaphorical buffet and see it from all angles.

And the winner is...

Rolex Motorsports Reunion, Laguna Seca

There are few more spectacular sights than watching racing cars drop through Laguna Seca’s infamous Corkscrew corners (often on three wheels), moreso when the cars in question happen to be a collection of fine histories from pre-war chuggers right the way up to 1990s screamers.
But as inspirational as the on-track action is, it’s in the paddock that the dual attributes of the unique Californian light quality and iconic American graphic livery design combine to keep us engaged for hours.

Very on-trend pastels for this Group C Porsche 962

Camel GT Datsun makes for a great game of 'name that font'

About as 'Merican as it gets
